Starlink Mini Travel Gear: Case, Mounts and Power for Parked Use
Quick answer:
The Mini kit already ships with a kickstand and a pipe adapter and flat mount, so a parked set-up needs no extra stand. What a traveller usually adds is a case (Starlink's official travel kit, or any padded case at least about 320 x 280 x 60 mm inside), a mount only where the site needs one (roof rack, mobility or pipe), and a power source that can deliver 25 to 40 W to the dish. This guide covers using the Mini while parked; it does not cover use in motion.

Mini gear is easy to over-buy because every accessory looks sensible for a trip. This guide separates what is already in the box from what is worth adding, using Starlink's own Mini specification sheet and Mini accessories guide, both checked on October 3, 2026. Specifications and what is sold can change, so confirm on the listing for your kit before you buy. It is about stationary use: pitching the dish where you have stopped. Whether the Mini works while moving is a plan and terms question this page does not answer.
Step 1: know what is already in the box
The specification sheet shows the Mini Kit with the dish (with integrated Wi-Fi), a kickstand, a pipe adapter and flat mount, a 15 m DC power cable, a power supply and the Starlink plug. For a first trip you can set the dish on its kickstand or clamp it to a pole with the supplied adapter. Check that your own kit matches before assuming this, because boxes and bundles differ by region and over time.
Step 2: size the case from the numbers
The sheet gives these figures for the Mini:
| Item | Size | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Dish | 298.5 x 259 x 38.5 mm (11.75 x 10.2 x 1.45 in) | 1.10 kg (2.43 lb) |
| Dish + kickstand | Kickstand 132 x 61 x 25 mm | 1.16 kg (2.56 lb) |
| Dish + kickstand + 15 m cable | - | 1.53 kg (3.37 lb) |
| Power supply | 91 x 44 x 51 mm (3.6 x 1.7 x 2.0 in) | 0.2 kg (0.44 lb) |
Adding the weights gives a working carry load of 1.53 kg + 0.2 kg = 1.73 kg for dish, kickstand, 15 m cable and power supply. For a padded case, leave about 10 mm of cushion on each side of the dish: 298.5 + 20 = 318.5 mm, 259 + 20 = 279 mm and 38.5 + 20 = 58.5 mm, so an inside size of roughly 320 x 280 x 60 mm is the minimum, before the cable coil and power supply. That 10 mm margin is our rule of thumb, not a Starlink figure.
The official Mini Travel Kit is made for this: a custom-fitted bumper case for drop protection, a sleeve that doubles as a carrying case, and an accessory pouch for the power components. The accessories guide gives its package size as 298 x 318.5 x 46 mm and package weight as 0.75 kg (1.65 lb). That is the package, so the kit itself may weigh less; added to the 1.73 kg above it puts a fully packed Mini at up to about 2.5 kg. If you rarely move the dish, a third-party padded case of the size above does the same job for less.
Official Mini travel kit listings on Amazon vary in availability; the official shop only sells accessories after you receive your order confirmation email.
Step 3: pick a portable mount only if the site needs one
Figures below are from Starlink's Mini accessories guide.
| Mount | Meant for | Official limits | Package weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipe adapter and flat mount | A pipe, or a flat surface; also replaces the kit's pipe adapter if damaged | Flat-mounting fasteners are not included | 0.35 kg (0.77 lb) |
| Roof rack mount | Vehicle roof racks; the Mini lifts off when not in use | Rack 12 to 48 mm (0.47 to 1.9 in) thick, up to 88 mm (3.5 in) wide; not for round profile bars | 0.6 kg (1.32 lb) |
| Mobility mount | Permanent mounting to wood, fiberglass, metal or plastic with a waterproof seal | Stainless fasteners; supports a 9 degree mounting angle; bolts, nuts and sealing washers in the kit | 0.6 kg (1.32 lb) |
Browse the options on Amazon (availability of official accessories varies): roof rack mount and mobility mount. The Mini also has fixed wall and pivot mounts, listed at 1.5 kg and 1.8 kg, for a building rather than a trip; the Standard-dish equivalents are compared in our mounts guide.
Will your rack fit? Measure two things
Measure the bar's thickness and width with calipers or a ruler. A flat bar 30 mm wide and 20 mm thick is inside the limits (88 mm wide, 12 to 48 mm thick). A round tube, however wide, is not, because the guide says the mount is not intended for round profile bars. If your rack fails either test, a mount made for a different rack is the safer buy than forcing this one.
Step 4: power, and how long a battery lasts
Starlink gives the Mini an average draw of 25 to 40 W and an input rating of 12 to 48 V at 60 W. For USB-C power, the specification sheet states a 100 W, 20 V / 5 A minimum (with the Starlink USB-C to barrel jack cable accessory). The accessories guide adds two relevant items: the Mini Car Adapter, which works with a standard 12 to 24 V automotive auxiliary outlet and powers the Mini over USB-C, and a 5 m Mini USB-C cable that needs a 100 W (20 V / 5 A) source and is not suitable for charging phones. A phone charger that is merely fast does not meet that.
Car adapter and 5 m USB-C cable are the two official power accessories for travel; the 15 m DC cable that comes in the kit is the right choice at a fixed campsite with mains power.
Battery arithmetic
Runtime in hours is battery watt-hours divided by watts drawn. For a 100 Wh battery, 100 / 40 = 2.5 h at the top of the range and 100 / 25 = 4 h at the bottom. Those are upper bounds: converting power loses some energy, so plan for less. If you want a full day, divide your hours by that range first and then size up; the power sizer does this for you, and the off-grid power guide covers batteries and solar in more depth.
Ports, weather and cables
The spec sheet's IP67 Type 4 rating applies with the DC power cable and the Starlink plug or cable installed, and it gives an operating range of -30 to 50 degrees C (-22 to 122 F). So the rating describes a sealed set-up, not an open port. If you want wired Ethernet outdoors, the accessories guide describes a 15 m Mini Starlink Ethernet Cable designed to keep a waterproof seal on the RJ45 connection; see the Ethernet setup guide for when you need wired at all.
What to skip
- A second stand for parked use: the kit already has a kickstand and a pipe adapter and flat mount.
- A roof rack mount on a round bar: the guide excludes it.
- A permanent mobility mount if the Mini only goes out for a weekend: it is for permanent mounting to a surface.
- A spare 15 m cable unless yours is damaged or you really need a second run, since the kit includes one.
- Any phone charger as a power source: it will not meet the 100 W (20 V / 5 A) requirement.
Before you buy
- Confirm your exact kit and what is in your box against the specification sheet.
- Decide the trip pattern: carried and pitched (case, kickstand) or fixed to a surface (mobility mount).
- Measure the rack, pipe or surface against the official limits above.
- Check the sky view with the obstruction checker at each stop.
- Size power from 25 to 40 W, and use a source that meets 100 W (20 V / 5 A) if you use USB-C.
- Test with the speed test once set up.

FAQ
Do I need to buy a stand for the Starlink Mini?
Not to get started. Starlink's Mini specification sheet lists a kickstand and a pipe adapter and flat mount in the box, together with the dish, a 15 m DC power cable, a power supply and the Starlink plug. Buy a mount only when your site needs one, such as a roof rack, a permanent flat surface or a wall.
What size roof rack does the official Mini roof rack mount fit?
According to Starlink's Mini accessories guide it attaches to roof racks from 12 mm (0.47 in) to 48 mm (1.9 in) thick, with a maximum width of 88 mm (3.5 in). It is not intended for round profile bars. Measure the thickness and width of your own bar before ordering.
Can I use these mounts while the vehicle is moving?
This guide covers setting the Mini up while parked. Starlink's accessories guide describes the roof rack mount for use on the go, but whether service works in motion depends on your plan and Starlink's terms, which this page does not cover. Check your own account and Starlink's help pages before relying on it, and never leave an unsecured dish on a moving vehicle.
How is the Starlink Mini powered from a car?
Starlink lists a Mini Car Adapter that works with a standard 12-24V automotive auxiliary outlet and powers the Mini over USB-C. Separately, the 5 m Mini USB-C cable needs a 100 W (20 V / 5 A) power source and is not meant for charging phones. The Mini's own input rating is 12-48 V, 60 W.
Is the Mini waterproof if I leave it out in the rain?
Starlink's specification sheet gives the Mini an IP67 Type 4 rating with the DC power cable and the Starlink plug or cable installed. That wording is a condition: an open or unsealed port is not covered by that rating. Starlink also sells a Mini Starlink Ethernet Cable designed to keep a waterproof seal on the RJ45 connection.
